From Greek words ‘old’ and ‘writing’; it is the rigorous discipline of deciphering ancient handwriting on codices [[➝ codex]] and papyri. The styles of writing determine the dates of MSS. So palaeography is an essential stage in textual criticism [[➝ criticism, biblical]] of the NT.
